Dental sealants are used to create a barrier between the teeth and the bacteria that causes tooth decay.  A clear plastic coating is painted on the chewing surfaces and bonds to the tooth.  They are generally placed over the molars, but often on the premolar teeth as well.  Sealants are meant to withstand normal wear and usage but do breakdown over time.  The condition of the sealants is checked at routine appointments and Dr. Harelick will let you know if they need to be repaired or replaced. We think of children and adolescents when we think of applying sealants, but many adults benefit from sealants as well!
